Drive Safely Darling

An unofficial music video that illustrates Tony Christie’s heartbreaking lyrics

during my Media Technology studies at Manchester Metropolitan University in 1999.

The task was to make a video clip for a piece of music of our own choice. Even at that time, the equipment was hopelessly outdated: a VHS-camera and linear editing. Therefore we decided to rather concentrate on narration than on quality and special effects.

Tony Christie’s classic about a tragic car accident perfectly fitted into this concept. We discovered the record in the 70s collection of a friend’s mom. She also sponsored the dress and yes — I’m an ugly woman! In the absence of a better alternative I had to play Darling myself and Mike convincingly mimed the husband.

The result was this trashy clip which is full of continuity errors. Nevertheless I love it because it made the tutor and my course mates rolling on the floor laughing and we received top marks for it.
